What “mid-market” means
Mid-market is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices that banks quote each other on the interbank market. It's the rate before any retail spread, commission, or transfer fee. When you change money at a bank counter or send funds abroad, expect a markup of 1–4% on top of the mid-market figure.
Where the data comes from
The European Central Bank publishes daily reference rates around 16:00 CET on business days. We read them via Frankfurter, a free, open API maintained as a thin layer over the ECB's feed. The rate doesn't change intraday; your browser caches the last value so the card paints instantly on repeat visits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the USD to ZAR exchange rate today?
The live ZAR mid-market rate against the US Dollar is shown at the top of this page. It is sourced from the European Central Bank, published once per business day around 16:00 CET. For the actual rate your bank or money transfer service will give you, expect a 1–4% retail markup on top of the mid-market figure.
What does "mid-market rate" mean?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices banks quote each other on the interbank market. It is the wholesale rate before any retail spread, commission, or transfer fee. Use it as a benchmark to compare quotes from your bank, Wise, Shyft, or PayFast.
Where does the ZAR exchange rate data come from?
From the European Central Bank, fetched via the free Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes reference rates once per business day at 16:00 CET. The figure does not move intraday on this page.
Can I use these rates for SARS tax filings?
SARS accepts the SARB-published average exchange rate (annual) or the spot rate on the transaction date. The ECB mid-market rate here is a reasonable proxy for budgeting and estimating tax on foreign income, but for the actual return submit the SARB rate.
