ECB reference rates
These rates come from the European Central Bank and are published every business day around 16:00 Central European Time. They are the rates banks trade at between themselves. Your bank or money-transfer service adds 1–4% on top.

Mid-market vs retail rates
The mid-market rate is the “fair” middle price between what banks buy and sell a currency for, before they add any fee. Banks and currency shops usually charge 1–4% on top. Services like Wise, Shyft, and OFX often charge under 1% on large transfers. Use the mid-market rate as your benchmark: if your quote is more than 4% worse, you are paying too much.
How much money can you send out of South Africa?
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) limits how much you can send abroad each calendar year. There are two allowances:
- Single discretionary allowance: R2 million per year, for any purpose (travel, gifts, investing). You do not need tax clearance. It was raised from R1 million in 2026.
- Foreign capital allowance: a further R10 million per year, mostly for investing abroad. You first need SARS approval (a SARS Approval for International Transfer, or AIT).
Both allowances reset on 1 January. Check the current limits with your bank before you transfer. Source: SARB Exchange Control Circular 6/2026.
These limits apply to money leaving South Africa. If you are emigrating, see the Tax Emigration Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ten currencies including the South African Rand: ZAR, USD (US Dollar), EUR (Euro), GBP (British Pound), JPY (Japanese Yen), AUD (Australian Dollar), CAD (Canadian Dollar), CHF (Swiss Franc), CNY (Chinese Yuan), and INR (Indian Rupee). You can convert between any two — Rand-to-foreign, foreign-to-Rand, or foreign-to-foreign.
Mid-market reference rates published daily by the European Central Bank, fetched live via the free Frankfurter API. The ECB updates rates around 16:00 CET on business days; the converter caches the last value in your browser so it works offline on repeat visits.
Banks and money transfer services add a retail spread (typically 1–4%) on top of the mid-market rate, plus fixed transfer or SWIFT fees. The mid-market figure shown here is the wholesale rate banks pay each other — useful as a benchmark to compare quotes, not the rate you will actually pay.
The ECB publishes reference rates once per business day, so the figure does not move intraday. For tick-by-tick rates, traders use Bloomberg or interbank feeds; for tax filings, holiday budgets, remittances, and emigration estimates, the daily ECB rate is the standard reference.
SARS accepts the average daily exchange rate published by SARB or the spot rate on the transaction date. The ECB mid-market rate shown here is a reasonable proxy for budgeting and estimating tax liability on foreign income, but for the actual return submit the SARB-published rate for the specific date.
Accurate as a benchmark. Use the mid-market figure to compare quotes from your bank, Wise, PayFast, or Shyft. A retail markup of more than 4% above this rate means you are overpaying. SARB exchange control rules apply to amounts above your annual R2 million Single Discretionary Allowance (raised from R1 million in 2026).
