How prices are set
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources publishes a new price each month, calculated from the previous month's average Basic Fuel Price (international crude + refining + freight) plus a fixed schedule of levies, the Road Accident Fund contribution, and regulated margins.
Why diesel is wholesale
Diesel has no regulated retail margin. The CEF publishes a wholesale price; individual stations add their own dealer margin, typically R0.50–R1.50/L. Petrol pump prices, by contrast, are fully regulated — what you see is what you pay.

Frequently asked questions
What is the petrol price in South Africa today?
The current regulated petrol 93 and petrol 95 prices for inland (Gauteng zone) and coastal regions are shown at the top of this page. Prices change at midnight on the first Wednesday of every month, set by the Department of Mineral & Petroleum Resources via the Central Energy Fund.
Why does inland petrol cost more than coastal?
A "zone differential" adds about 30 cents per litre to inland prices to recover the cost of transporting fuel from coastal refineries and ports to Gauteng. The differential is set by the regulator, not by individual stations.
When does the SA fuel price change?
The regulated pump price changes once per month, effective from midnight on the first Wednesday. The CEF announces the change roughly a week in advance based on global crude prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate over the previous month.
Is diesel price-regulated like petrol?
No. The CEF publishes a wholesale diesel price, but individual stations add their own dealer margin (typically R0.50–R1.50/litre). The figure on this page is the wholesale benchmark; the retail price at your pump may be higher.
What is the difference between petrol 93 and petrol 95?
The number is the octane rating. Most modern South African vehicles run on 95; 93 is recommended at altitude (Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, parts of North West) where lower air density makes higher octane unnecessary. Coastal regions sell only 95.
