How Much Car Can You Actually Afford? A South African's Guide to Vehicle Finance

Last reviewed:

Buying a car is one of the biggest financial decisions most South Africans make. The sticker price is just the beginning — interest, NCA fees, insurance, and optional balloon payments all affect what you actually pay. Understanding these costs before you sign is essential.

How Vehicle Finance Works in SA

Vehicle finance (also called an instalment sale agreement) is a secured loan where the vehicle serves as collateral. You pay a monthly instalment over a fixed term (typically 48–72 months). The bank retains ownership until the final payment. All four major banks — WesBank, Standard Bank, Absa, and MFC (Nedbank) — offer vehicle finance with identical NCA-regulated fees.

NCA Fees: The Same Everywhere

The National Credit Act regulates two fees that every vehicle finance agreement includes: an initiation fee of R1,207.50 (incl VAT) and a monthly service fee of R69 (incl VAT). These fees are the maximum allowed — and every major bank charges the maximum. The initiation fee is typically capitalised into the loan (added to the amount financed).

Balloon Payments: Lower Monthly, Higher Total

A balloon payment (also called a residual value or guaranteed future value) is a lump sum due at the end of the finance term. Common balloon percentages are 20–30% of the vehicle price. A balloon reduces your monthly instalment but increases the total cost because you pay interest on the full amount for the entire term, then still owe the balloon at the end.

What Interest Rate to Expect

Banks price vehicle finance based on your credit profile. Excellent credit may qualify for prime rate (currently 11.75%). Average credit may be priced at prime + 3% to prime + 5%. The NCA maximum for vehicle finance is (repo × 2.2) + 7%, currently about 23.5%.

The 20% Rule

A common financial guideline: your total car-related costs (instalment, insurance, fuel, maintenance) should not exceed 20% of your gross monthly income. If you earn R30,000/month, aim for total car costs under R6,000/month.
